Thanks to the boats provided by the association of municipalities, we have witnessed an ecological feat. A staggering total of 57.12 m3 of waste was collected from the coastline, marking significant progress in our goal to keep our beaches and oceans clean.

The Common Enemy: Plastic

Accounting for 75% of the total waste collected, plastic remains the main culprit of marine pollution. Despite numerous campaigns and growing awareness, this non-biodegradable waste continues to wash up on our shores. This figure is a stark reminder of the need for collective action. Citizens must be aware of the seriousness of this problem and take an active role in reducing it.

Other Waste on the Rise

Apart from plastic, we have observed an increase in the collection of seaweed, wood and organic matter. Although these substances are more environmentally friendly than plastic, their accumulation can affect the aesthetics of our beaches and the ecological balance.

Municipalities in the vanguard

Collaboration between municipalities has been essential to these achievements. Marbella, Estepona, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Manilva and Casares led the way in waste collection. Considering the extent of each, this joint effort demonstrates the importance of unity in the fight against marine pollution.

Our Daily Commitment

The coastal cleaning service during the summer has been relentless. We have a team of 15 boats, distributed between the coast and the beach. These boats, in their commitment to the environment, work from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, and extend their hours from 10am to 8pm on weekends and public holidays.

Conclusions and Call for Action

The figures speak for themselves. The waste collection initiative on the Costa del Sol has been a success, but the work is far from over. The high volume of plastics collected is a reminder that there is still much to be done.

It is essential that as citizens we take responsibility and contribute to the cause, whether it is by reducing plastic consumption, recycling or participating in community clean-ups. Together, with effort and determination, we can ensure that our beaches and seas remain pristine for future generations.

July has been an extraordinary month for the Costa del Sol.
